Dear Parents:

As you may be aware, California school districts continue to face severe budget reductions.  School funding has been slashed to 2005-2006 levels, which, for the PYLUSD, will mean a funding shortfall of $15 million.  While our District is somewhat fortunate in that we have general fund reserves and federal stimulus dollars that will allow us to implement the required ongoing reductions over three years, the challenge ahead is significant.

Although it is never easy sharing news of this nature, I believe it is important that you remain informed.  With that in mind, the district has established a Budget Information Page on our district website (www.pylusd.org) that will provide you the same information that is being provided to staff members.  I would encourage you to log on and check the page periodically for updates.

The PYLUSD is strong and capable, and I have been gratified—although not surprised—to see a rising tide of determination across the district to face this challenge together.  And, clearly, that is the key.  The PYLUSD family, which includes students, parents, and staff, has never waivered in doing what is necessary to ensure outstanding educational opportunities for our students, and this challenge is no exception.  We greatly value our community and your continued support as we work together to safeguard the future of our children.

Sincerely,

Dennis Smith

Superintendent
