Summer Opportunity

This summer the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Orange County is working with our local courts to create a learning opportunity for teens age 13-18.

In order to teach kids about our legal system and our constitutional rights, they are sponsoring a program called Peer Court, where teens form juries to hear cases of juvenile offenders.

You can learn more from the flyer, which I have posted in the Web Files in the folder called "Summer Opportunity."  There are three dates that your child can participate: one in June, one in July, and one in August.  Check it out!

Grading Update - 5/14

I have been hard at work reading all of those Medieval Manor Projects you turned in last Friday.  I have finished and posted grades for periods 2, 4 & 5.  Right now I'm working on period 3, and some grades are now in Aeries.  Next I will work on period 7, and then period 6 is last.  I am posting grades to Aeries daily for as much as I can finish.

Also, grades for the Medieval Europe Unit Test (also from last Friday) were posted to Aeries yesterday.  The progress report that's headed home this week does include the Unit Test.  It also included a zero for missing projects, but project scores only for periods 5.

Please continue to check Aeries for the latest grade information!

Thank you!!!

**Parents, please check your email for the grade report I sent from Aeries this morning.

Today, due to CST Testing, I am only going to see Periods 3 & 7.  All other class periods will do today's work tomorrow.

I am giving students the entire period to work on their Medieval Manor Project and/or the Green Cheat Sheet for the Medieval Europe Unit Test.  The project is due this Friday, and the Unit Test is also this Friday.

Please be warned: I am giving students LOTS of class time to work on this project.  Any late projects will automatically lose half credit, like other late work.  But this project is worth a LOT more points than regular classwork or homework.  Please be sure to finish your project on time & turn it in this Friday!

Monday, April 29, 2013

1.  Reading: "King John & the Magna Carta"

2.  Essay Analysis: "Advantages of Fighting in the Crusades"

NOTE:  The purpose of doing the essay analysis is to reming students what good writing should look like, as this is the same kind of paragraph I am expecting for each topic on the Medieval Manor Project.  Paragraphs should have a good topic sentence, three details, and supporting commentary to explain each detail.

I am helping students with this concept in class today.  I provided students with topic sentences and details for the first two topics:

1.  Feudalism:  Feudalism is the exchange of service and loyalty for protection, which brought safety and structure to Medieval Europe.

*why did feudalism develop?

*what is the lord & vassal relationship?

2.  Manor:  The manor was the center of medieval life.

*why is a manor developed?

*who lives on the manor?

*what are the important features?

Homework:  Students should write the first three pages of their Medieval Manor Project (Feudalism, Manors, & Nobles) by Wednesday, 5/1.

Nixon Library Test Tomorrow!!!

Please, please, please study!!!!!

Not only can every student achieve an individual honor on this test, but also we are in a competition against the other middle schools.  Today, Mrs. Fierro's students were AMAZING & earned a BUNCH of perfect scores.  I really believe with every student giving his or her best effort, this year's 7th graders could be the first Kraemer students ever to win the trophy for the top performing school in PYLUSD!  We can do it!!!

Today we reviewed a lot, and finished learning all of Europe.

Some classes also worked on Islands also.

The Nixon Library Geography Test is a very challenging test -- there is a LOT to learn!  Parents -- anything you can do to encourage or help your child prepare is much appreciated.  Again, there are good computer review games out there, especially:

Middle East

Good luck!!!

About ABI/Aeries/Grades

Parents & Students:

When you view your grades through the ABI Portal, it looks different from what I see.  ABI recently made a change so that you can continue to see all of the graded assignments in my gradebooks for your child's work for the entire year.  However, I want to clarify that the grade your child is earning in social studies is NOT a cumalative grade for the year.

Each quarter begins with a fresh start, and for middle school kids -- that's important!  So even though you can see the old assignments, they do not count toward the current quarter.

Assignments that have numbers in the 100's are from the first quarter.  Assignments that have numbers from the 200's are from the second quarter.  And in February we just started the thrid quarter, so you are now beginning to see assignments numbered with 300's.

This new formatting is not my decision, nor is it within my control, but I do think it's good for parents and students to be able to see the pattern of their work habits -- for better or worse -- but don't worry!  Each quarter is a fresh, new start to do better if needed!

If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me by email:

Periods 2, 3, 4, 5, & 7:

Work to complete Chapter 4 Q&A (sections 2-4)

This assignment is due tomorrow, and there's a quiz tomorrow on it.  Each question on the quiz specifically references where in the Q&A you can find the answer.  However, this is only helpful if your answers are complete and correct, so do a good job to help yourself on the quiz.

Period 6 HONORS:

Continue "Great Speeches" oral presentations.  No Homework.

Periods 2, 3, 4, 5, & 7:

We are going back to read CHapter 4 on Imperial China (sections 2-4) and answering Q&A's on worksheets (one for each section).  Q&A's for sections 2-4 should be stapled together in order.  They are due Thursday, and there will be a quiz Thursday.  This is the first graded work for the 3rd quarter -- start with your best effort!!!

We will also have all of tomorrow in class to work on this same assignment.

As always, the review quiz is open-note.  Thursday's quiz cites where exactly to look in the Q&A's for the answer to each question.  However, if you don't write in a complete and correct answer, you are not likely to get the answer correct on the quiz.  Don't just fill in the space -- do your best work!!!

Period 6 HONORS:

Great Speeches are due in writing today.  Also, we will start giving speeches in class.  Speeches will continue through Thursday of this week, and while students will be expected to take notes during the speeches, there will be no homework.

Today we are starting our review for the Nixon Library Geography Program.  All students in my classes will be taking the Geography Test on Thursday, February 21.

There are 311 places on the study list, and 35 places from that list will be on the actual test.  To prepare, we need to learn all of them!  On the test, students have to be able to point to each place on the world map.

Students who earn 32 points (out of 35) earn a certificate of achievement.  Students who earn a perfect score get to go on a field trip and awards ceremony to the Nixon Library in April.

Today we will be working on identifying:

* geographic terms

* continents & oceans

* canals

* deserts

* bays

* Honors -- add gulfs

The 2012-2013 Nixon Library Study List is available to print in the Geography Web Files folder now.  Your map & study guide will be sent home with you next week.

Tomorrow's Southeast Asia Map Quiz will be the last assignment added to the gradebook for the second quarter.  That gives students all next week to make up work.  Any new work we do next week will count toward the third quarter grade report.

1.  Correct the Islam & Africa Unit Test (from December).  Students received points (under "Unit Test Corrections") for following directions and circling the correct answers for any questions they missed.  If your child has a zero, he/she did not follow directions and circle the correct information.  If that space is blank in the gradebook, your child needs to come in before school and make the corrections him/herself to receive the points.

2.  What I Know About Islam & Africa.  3 paragraphs, 10 sentences each (minimum).  The topics for the three paragraphs are on the paper, and in class I gave students topic sentences for each paragraph to get them started.  This is due Thursday, 1/10, and students can get a parent signature on this assignment for extra credit points.

Progress Reports Coming....

Yikes!!!  I just noticed on my calendar that progress report grades need to be submitted (by teachers) by Tuesday morning.  They will be printed at the district office and mailed home at the end of the week -- arriving just in time for Christmas.

Don't let an error ruin your Winter Break or holiday season!  We have been passing back graded work this week, but I have asked students to please look and VERIFY on Aeries (ABI) that they have received credit correctly for their work.  Please do check up on me!!!

I work very hard to be careful and accurate, but if I have made an error, I would like to fix it.  Please bring me the work I have mismarked, and I will happily fix my mistake!  But please check NOW and notify me on Monday, so that I can fix any errors prior to sending out the Progress Report.

I wouldn't want anyone to get on Santa's naughty list....

Wonderful Wednesday!!!  It's time to have a fun day in class!  We are going to do an activity called "Writing in Arabic" -- students who complete the Arabic Translation worksheet and the summary on the back will earn five points of extra credit, which will go on the second quarter grade.  Due tomorrow for extra credit.

2.  Study for Friday's Map Quiz: the Middle East

The Outline & resources page to show that you are making progress on your Research Project are due next Tuesday, after the long weekend.  Be sure to ask if you have any questions or concerns.  I'm here to help!

I am finishing up grades for the first quarter, as the end of the quarter is this Friday.  The last assignments that will be included in the first quarter are from last Friday -- so if you were absent this week, you have time to make up this week's stuff in the second quarter.  Please check Aeries/ABI to verify that I have entered all of your scores correctly.  I try really hard to be accurate, but I do make mistakes from time to time.  I am happy to correct my mistakes if you will please bring me the paper(s) to show me what I have done incorrectly.  Thanks for your help!!!

Quiz grades from the Rise of Islam lecture quiz & the 5 Pillars quiz were very disappointing.  These are open-note quizzes, and all of the answers are in the notes!!!  If we need more practice on independent reading for comprehension, we can certainly do more book work for practice, but that is soooooooooo boring!!!

If for ANY reason you need to make up last week's Unit Test on Rome, and haven't done so yet, your LAST OPPORTUNITY is this WEDNESDAY after school 3:30 - 4:30.  If you haven't made up your Rome Unit Test by then, you will keep zero points out of 100, because we will be grading these tests together in class Thursday.

Last update: 10/15/2012 9:43:34 AM     Comments (0)

Roman Empire Unit Test

Most of the Roman Empire Unit Tests are complete.  A few students who had been absent still need to come take it.  Your last chance is next Wednesday after school on October 17, here in Room 306.  If you do not come and take the test by then, you will keep a score of zero out of one hundred points.

I have run almost all of the scantrons, and therefore I've been able to post test scores to ABI.  Also, right before the Unit Test grade is the "Cheat Sheet" grade.  You may notice that if your child did not do well on the homework, it could likely be due to effort on the Cheat Sheet.

Next week on Thursday, we will be correcting the original copy (not the scantron copy) of the test in class for remediation.  Thursday, tests will be sent home for parents to see and sign for extra credit.  At that point, no more make-up tests will be given.

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Today we're going to spend the class period reviewing for tomorrow's Roman Empire Unit Test, and developing student Cheat Sheets.  The more information students record on their Cheat Sheets, the more useful it is to them on the test tomorrow.

Tomorrow's Unit Test will be 50 questions, multiple choice, on a scantron form.  Points correct will be doubled for a total of 100 points on the test total.

Today, some classes will have the option to play a review game.  Other classes will spend the time working on their Cheat Sheets.

Parents: please check your child's progress on the Cheat Sheet tonight!!!  It is a green paper, and is organized into sections that match the test.  There are very specific hints about what is on the test, but your child needs to fill in the details, or it will not be of much help.  Thanks for your support!

Progress Reports

Parents & Students --

Teachers are required to send home progress reports for any students who are failing or in danger of failing, half-way through each quarter.  I think it's just easier to send grades for every student!  Hopefully you are already checking grades on Aeries, but if you haven't yet, please contact the office if you need help.

I just updated grades in all classes, including a bunch of extra credit from the start of school.  This includes all assignments I have collected so far EXCEPT for the essay I collected this week & the Europe Map Quiz students just took today.

The grade you can currently see in Aeries is the grade I am using for Progress Reports.  If you are registered with Aeries and the school has your email address, then you should receive an email copy of the report from me this evening.  If you do not receive one, then your email address is unknown to the school.  Please contact the office to update your information.

Thank you!!!

Back to School Night

Parents -- It was so great to see and meet so many of you at Back to School last night.  What a pleasure!!!  (And I apologize again for talking so fast.)

If you weren't able to attend BTSN, but you still want the information, I have put a copy of the packet I handed out last night in the Web File "Back to School" for your convenience.

Huge thank you to the Huynh Family for being the first to donate disinfectant wipes to help keep our student desks clean.  The kids & I all greatly appreciate your generosity!!!

PARENT SURVEY -- The last page of the packet I gave you last night (or you can also get it on the website) is a PARENT SURVEY, where I ask for more information about your child.  With 200 students I see daily, it can be a challenge to know every child well, but that is my favorite part of my job.  If you could please fill out the survey and return it to me with your child, I would be so grateful.  Many, many thanks!!!

1.  Map Quiz: South America

2.  The Fall of Rome Summary -- please see written directions!  This two-paragraph mini-essay is due Tuesday, 10/2.  Students should have plenty of time in class (about 30 minutes) to complete the majority of this writing.  They do not have to complete it over the weekend, but can finish Monday night, as it is due next Tuesday.

HELP:  In class, I wrote frames for the two topic sentences.  Students may use these or change them as desired.

Paragraph 1 Topic Sentence:

I believe that the three most significant factors that led to the fall of the Roman Empire were (1) ________, (2) __________, and (3) ________.  [Use lecture notes & choose 3 of the 12 Reasons Rome Fell, explaining each.]

Paragraph 2 Topic Sentence:

There are many historians who compare the USA to the Roman Empire, and I believe that we [will/will not] follow a similar path.  [Use the analysis part of the notes where we compared the USA to Rome to support your opinion either way.  But do choose one side and support your side with evidence of how we are similar or different.]

Study for Friday's Map Quiz (South America).  It takes practice!!!  On the map tests so far it is really clear who has been studying, and who has not put forth any effort.  Most of the grades on the quizzes so far are either A's or F's.  This does not take a lot of time -- just a small daily effort.

Grades Online on Aeries

Parents & Students --

FYI, teachers in PYLUSD keep our gradesbooks on a computer program called Aeries.  If you haven't used it before, you really should check it out as soon as possible.  As a parent, you get to see how your child is doing in every class -- with details about every assignment.  It's a great way to keep track of your child's progress.

I have been inputting grades in Aeries since the first week of school.  There are three quiz grades posted so far.

All you need for an Aeries account is an email address and your family code/password to get started.  You can get that information by calling the Kraemer front office at (714) 996-1551.  It's pretty easy to use after you get in the first time.  And it's the same system we use all the way through high school too.

If you're here on the website to read up on what's going on, you are going to LOVE Aeries!!!

September 11, 2012

Personally, today is a really hard day for me.  I really do not like to talk about it.  But I think as your history teacher, I have a responsibility to teach about it.  Most students in my classes were only a year old at the time and do not have memories of 9/11/2001.  But I think you need to know this part of our country's recent history.

Today we will listen to oral histories from survivors and relatives from the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.  These oral histories, and more, are available through the 9/11 Memorial Museum (online) at  and their partner, StoryCorps,

We will take notes about the nine oral histories we listen to in class, and then all students will be assigned to do their own interview (using the same worksheet & questions) of an adult about that day.  Interviews are due Friday.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

Today we:

1.  Reviewed the world map for our QUIZ FRIDAY, and learned some tricks for memorization.  I also passed out a practice quiz that students can use to prepare for Friday's Quiz.  This is NOT an assignment that needs to be turned in, but is for your benefit if you choose to take advantage of it.

2.  Personal Coat of Arms assignment -- DUE FRIDAY.  Since our theme throughout the year mainly focuses on the medieval era in world history, we are creating a coat-of-arms, but it's really a way for me to get to know you better.  Please use a photo for the first box.  You may draw & color the rest.  I am NOT the art police.  Effort counts here, more than artistic ability!  :)

Welcome!!!  What a great day we had together!!!

Today we:

1.  established a seating chart & students are helping me learn their names (please be patient with me as I try to learn correct pronunciations!)

2.  Labeled & colored a World Map.  This map will be due Friday & there's a quiz on it Friday too.

3.  At the end of the day, I asked students to write me a quick note about how they are doing.  If you need to change seats to see the board better, or because you're left handed... whatever it is, please let me know how I can help.  :)

Welcome to Kraemer!!!

Seventh grade is SUCH a fun year for social studies!  We are going to have a great year together!

Seventh grade world history is basically the medieval and Renaissance eras around the globe.  This year's curriculum will connect a lot of what you learned last year in 6th grade (Ancient Civilizations), to the modern world history you will take in 10th grade (Modern World History).

But the cool part is that 7th grade medieval stuff is violent, creepy, and gross.  I promise you will love learning about samurai warriors, the Black Death, and lots of amazing people, places & inventions.  I totally LOVE world history -- and even if you think you aren't really into social studies, just wait!  You will be!

About Mrs. Watson...

I am so excited for this school year to begin!  Yippee!!!  I love teaching and seventh graders and Kraemer, and I can hardly wait for September, to tell you the truth!

My Background:

I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of California, Riverside (UCR), and worked in politics for a few years in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento.  Within two years, I went back to school at night to earn my teaching credential at National University.  Given my background, I thought I'd teach high school Government/Civics and Economics.  However, I discovered a new love: middle schoolers.  And the rest is, literally, history.

I have been teaching 7th grade Social Studies (World History) since September 2000.  That was also the year I started traveling to the parts of the world that I teach about.  So far I've been to 18 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.  In 2003, I finished my Master of Science degree in Education, at Cal State Fullerton, where my area of focus was gifted and talented education for second language learners.

Personal Stuff:

I am happily married to my best friend.  We are adoptive parents of three children from Russia: two boys and a girl.  We all love animals, and in addition to the five people, our family also includes two German Shepherd dogs, one cat, and four chickens.  I love to read, listen to music, work in our garden, and take a LOT of pictures.  I also have a small garden out in front of my classroom.

I only ever made one kid throw up.  The Bubonic Plague really is nasty.  The second one had the flu, and it was a coincidence that she was in my room when she had to vomit.  I also have kind of a strange fascination with toilets (I mean, I like to know how people throughout history really lived.  And nothing is more real than a toilet, right?)  Just keeping things real, here, folks.

I am 6' tall, which can be scary if you are short and I'm standing over you.  Sorry about that.  I stand a lot; students sit a lot.  It happens.  But actually, I'm nice most of the time, and I try really hard to be fair.  If I make a mistake, I want to apologize and make things right.  If I don't know I've made a mistake, please don't hesitate to let me know.  I know that sometimes talking to adults can be intimidating, but I have a LOT of respect for kids that can brave it!

Parents of Kids with Special Needs:

Let's not wait for an IEP in the spring to touch base, okay?  Please let me know how I can best help your child.  I have a few textbooks on CD/DVD, if your child struggles with reading.  I can modify homework, essays or projects.  But I need your help.  I typically teach about 200 students each day, and the start of the year (and learning many new names & faces) can be difficult.  If you could drop me a note to give me more information about your child, it would really help me a lot.  The fastest, best way to reach me is by e-mail:

Thanks so much!!!

Ooops!!!  I made a mistake in two classes yesterday and entered grades for one assignment in the column for a different assignment.  A gracious parent brought the error to my attention, and I believe I have fixed & updated that error now, as well as adding more graded work.

I know I'm a little behind -- and I am working hard to try to catch up.  Please bear with me!

The biggest grade, by far, right now, is the Medieval Europe Unit Test, which is a problem.  The Scantron machine (we took the tests on a scantron form to make grading "faster & easier" -- ha ha ha) is broken and we are waiting on a part.  If it doesn't come by Monday, I will find another school site where I can go to get it done.  But I am sorry for the delay!

Nixon Library Awards Ceremony Update

Parents -- the Awards Ceremony for students who earned a perfect score on the Nixon Library Test will be held on Thursday, April 19 at the Nixon Library's East Room.  The ceremony is scheduled for 10:00 am, and should not last for more than 2 hours (at the most), but you should get there early to get a seat.  The parent section is usually pretty crowded with parents from all across the district.

Right now, we are waiting to find out if there will be a "ticket" system in place, limiting the number of people that each student can invite.  I will keep you posted as I know more.  Thank you!!!

Today we are continuing our lecture notes from yesterday, "Japan's Feudal Age."  We will not quite finish, so there is no homework tonight.

Tomorrow we will finish the last couple slides of notes, and then use those notes to take a quiz.  After the quiz, students will meet in their Build-a-Samurai groups for last-minute preparation.

We are on a modified schedule (shorter class periods) today, due to the State 7th Grade Writing Test.

Today in class students are starting lecture notes called "Feudalism in Japan."

There is no homework, but students should be thinking about what they want to bring for Friday's Build-a-Samurai contest.

Also, teachers are turning in grades this morning for 3rd Quarter Progress Reports.  If you regularly check Aeries, you already know how your child is doing, but this is just a head's up that you should be getting your report in the mail sometime next week.

No More Maps!!!  :)

Today, we are going back in time to the Heian Period of Japanese History.  It's the Golden Age and the Emperor and his courtiers are living lives of luxury in Kyoto.  One of the most popular pasttimes is writing poetry, and especially haiku.  So in honor of the Heian Period, today we are learning to write haiku poems.  The formula is simple: they have only three lines, with only five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the middle line, and five syllables in the last line.  That's not a lot of words to use, but in that limited amount of space, it's your job to use words with powerful imagery to paint a picture in your reader's mind.

HW: Write 5 Haiku Poems about Japan.  Due Wednesday, 2/29.

If you feel the need for more inspiration, I've got more Images of Japan on my website under the Webfiles.  Have fun writing!  Remember, if you don't have your homework complete on Wednesday, you will not participate in our art project Friday!

"Images of Japan" -- Today we are using the whole period to listen to Japanese shakuhachi (flute) music and look at a series of beautiful images from Japan (Mt. Fuji, Torii gates, a samurai warrior, Japanese traditional dancers, cherry blossoms, and Himeji castle) and BRAINSTORM as many words as we can come up with, writing them down on paper.  This is going to create a word bank for use in writing haiku poems about Japan next week.

No Homework for the weekend!

I have one ELD class with 24 students, who earned a total of 495 points, or 20.625 average per student.

Today's the day!!!  I'm so excited!  We are taking the Nixon Library Geography Test today in all of my classes.  There's no homework tonight & hopefully students will be coming home & feeling like celebrating tonight.  This is a really difficult test!  Most of us adults could not pass this test.  But the harder the challenge, the greater the accomplishment.  I know the kids are going to make me super proud today.  I'll blog at the end of today about our results.  :)

I hope you had a FABULOUS four-day weekend for President's Day!

Today, we are back at work reviewing for the Nixon Library's Geography.  All of my classes take this test on Thursday this week.

Today we will finish the last few countries of Eastern Europe & then move onto Africa.

To be clear, we have spent A LOT of class time on preparing for this test, and it WILL be a part of students' grades for this quarter.  Out of the 35 questions, I expect all students to get at least 30 correct.  So 30 correct = 100%  If students earn points over 30, those extra points will be extra credit.  Then the total will be multiplied by two, so it is out of 60 points total, with 10 points of extra credit possible for those who earn perfect scores.

Please do practice at home!  There is so much to review!!!

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Today we are taking another step forward in our preparation for the Nixon Library's Geography Program.  My classes will all be taking the Nixon Library Test on Thursday, 2/23.  Today, I sent home envelopes from the Nixon Library with maps and study guides.  The maps are poster-sized world maps, and it would be great if there's a place around the house where students can hang their maps to study.

In class today, we worked on sections from the Study Guide, including:

*Equator, Tropics of Cancer & Capricorn

*Hemispheres & directions

*Continents & Oceans

*and in period 3 Honors we also covered Straits & Gulfs

Students who earn a perfect score on the Nixon Library Test will be eligible for the awards ceremony & field trip to the Nixon Library in April.  This is a very challenging test, and my advice in class to students today was that if you are really want to be one of those top students who earns a perfect score, you should review whatever we study for the day in class at home, and also study the islands & countries of Africa from the Study Guide at home on your own.

Last year, Kraemer's 7th graders (now 8th graders) set a record for our highest level of achievement in 13 years.  33 of my 185 students last year earned perfect scores -- it was amazing!!!  I am hopeful that this year's group of 7th graders will do even better!  I know you can do it!!!

I hope you are enjoying your long weekend.

Just for fun, I want to share a link with you, in case you haven't seen it before.  This morning as I finish grading papers, I am watching an American bald eagle adding to and sitting on her nest.  Last year this same female hatched three eaglets in this nest and we watched them hatch, grow feathers & learn to fly.  It was AMAZING!!!

Thank you!!!

Students, you were so terrific last week when I was out sick.  I am so grateful to have such wonderful students.  Thank you for being so well-behaved and helpful to the substitute teachers, and doing all you were asked.  It makes me very proud when substitute teachers leave such kind praise about you!

As my thank you gift, and since we just finished our study of Imperial China, today we are going to watch the documentary, Everest.  It is an amazing movie made by the IMAX crew about a group of climbers attempting to summit Mt. Everest.  You'll love it!!!  Enjoy!

P.S.  The book I was recommending in class is called Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.  Krakauer was on the mountain at the same time as our video crew, and he was climbing with Rob Hall's team.  It is a fascinating read!

So gross, I have to share...

Yesterday in class I shared with a few students that, while sick, I found myself doing some online shopping from bed.  And because I teach middle school (and am therefore clearly a little strange), I could not resist buying dog poop soap for my two sons for Valentine's Day.  Seriously, it looks so fabulously disgusting, I could not resist!  And it smells like brownies!!!  Ewwwww.....

Just in case you wanted to see it (or order some yourself), here is the link:

So sorry to fall behind....

Please accept my apologies for falling a bit behind this week!  I came down with a nasty stomach flu Tuesday night that took me totally by surprise! (Yes, I DID have a flu shot, too!)  Anyhow, I am working hard to catch up on grading & will update again after doing more grading over the weekend.

Students may still make up quizzes or turn in make up/absent work next week through Thursday for the second quarter.  All of the work we do in class next week will count toward the third quarter grades.

Tuesday, January 3, 2012 -- Welcome Back!!!

Hope you all had a fabulous Winter Break & Holiday Season!!!

Now that' we are back, there are only a few weeks left until the end of the semester, so it's going to feel like a rush to the finish.  Technically, the end of the semester is Friday, January 27, which is also a non-student day.  However, I will close the gradebook on the previous Friday, January 20, to allow anyone who is absent the extra time to make up work the last week.  That means any work we do from January 23 forward will count toward the third quarter of the academic year.

1.  Map: Russian Republics - **Quiz Friday (we have lots of tricks for this map!  yea!)

2.  Collect Extra Credit assignments from Winter Break

3.  Pictionary Review Game (Imperial China)

HW: Study for Map Quiz & practice tricks!!!

Instead of the Review game, we haven't been working on China as long, so this will be hard.  We will start lecture notes today called "Imperial China."

Students who haven't finished the Chapter 4 work will work to complete that in class today.

Students who have finished the Chapter 4 Q&A get to watch a video for a reward.  Oh, and we made popcorn too!  Yum!!!  The video is called "The Haunted Hills: Ghost Stories of the Ozarks."  It is a documentary-style video, based on oral histories taken from people who live in the area and believe they've seen ghosts, or who tell ghost stories that have been passed down through generations of local people.  It's just for fun!!!  (Not scary, I promise!)

Great job to the presenters who taught their research project workshops today.  It's difficult to stand up and speak to a group of people -- even a small group.  But you knew your topics well and did a very good job!  And now you can sit back & enjoy presentations tomorrow & Friday!  Yippee!!!  Congratulations on a job well done!

My Apologies to Period 5 --

I made a mistake in the gradebook yesterday & only included grades for about half of the class on the Test Corrections assignment.  I realized my mistake when I got home, but couldn't fix it until I came back to school this morning.  I have now fixed my omissions, and I apologize to anyone who worried that you were not receiving credit for your work.  Grades should be updated & correct now, with the exception of any late/absent work turned in today.

Parents:  I apologize for the delay in posting second quarter grades.  My internet is down in my classroom, and I have to post remotely.  This makes it difficult to enter grades and also to post some attachments to my website. The district technology department is "working on it."

I did just update grades in Aeries.  It's not complete, but definitely includes most of the work for the second quarter so far.  Again, I apologize for the delay!

Roman Empire Unit Test today -- use your green Cheat Sheet!!!

*parents -- I am collecting & grading the green Cheat Sheet, so you can tell in Aeries if your student took advantage of this opportunity to prepare for the test.

HW:  Study for Friday's Map Quiz -- Europe (political)

Some students see "study for Map Quiz" and think they have no homework because they don't have to turn something in the following day.  But on Fridays it is always very clear who HAS and who HAS NOT studied during the week.  With only 10 minutes of study time TOTAL between Monday and Friday, most students can earn at least a B on the map quiz.  It doesn't take much time -- just the EFFORT to do well!!!

Parents, you can help your student on Thursdays by using the numbered Practice Quiz (which students receive on Mondays) to test your child and help him/her really know if he/she is prepared.

**Tear art is a project created from colored construction paper & glue.  Students choose one of the vocabulary words for this unit, and make a tear art to show the meaning of that word.  Students may not use scissors, pens or pencils on the tear art, except to put their name, date & period on the back side.  Your points depend on how well you show word meaning.

Tips for New 7th Graders

Welcome new students!!!  You are going to LOVE school at Kraemer!  Getting adjusted to a new school can be a little scary sometimes, so here are a few tips to help you feel at home:

*Smile!  Everyone is nervous for the first week of school, even if they don't act like it.  The first few weeks is the best time to make lots of new friends.  Smile and be friendly to everyone!  Learn peoples' names.  It's the smallest acts of thoughtfulness and kindness that make the greatest impressions on people.

*Get a good night's sleep & eat a healthy breakfast!  It can be really stressful to have seven different classes and teachers.  And the first week is so confusing!  Kids get lost, forget their schedule, go to the wrong lunch....  it's easy to make a mistake.  But you can roll with the stress better & make better decisions if you have had a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast in the morning.  Really.

*Make a moment to make a positive impression.  Sometime in the first week of school, take a few seconds at the beginning or end of class to connect to each of your teachers.  Have a word, one-on-one, to introduce yourself or connect about something you may have in common.  It helps the teacher remember you (some of us see over 200 students each day!) and helps you feel more comfortable about approaching that teacher later when you need help.

*If you get to choose your seat in a class, opt for the front of the room, on the left side.  More teachers are right handed, and that's the side we tend to pay more attention to.  Studies show that students who sit in the front are more involved and do better in class.

*Get involved at Kraemer!  The more you put in to something, the more you get out of it.  So get involved with after school sports, peer leadership, art studio, Battle of the Books, dance team, colorguard, whatever!  It's a great way to make friends, feel part of what's happening at Kraemer, and keep a positive attitude.

I am excited to meet you on September 7th!  Welcome again!!!  :)
